Handling Adverse Events – When Anesthetists Become ‘’Second Victims’’

Most anesthetists are likely to be involved in an intraoperative adverse event or a patients’ death during their career. The focus of an anesthetist’s training is often focused on the safe delivery of anesthesia. We are trained ‘not to err’. Little training or support is received in the management of guilt, grief, and shame. In this presentation, we will be discussing the impact of adverse events and patient death on the anesthetic provider, and one strategy to break bad news to clients. We will also be discussing the term ‘second victim’ and strategies available to support the individual and the team.
