This seminar will focus on the newest, yet most practical analgesic techniques used in a variety of laboratory animal species such as rabbits, rodents, primates, etc. Emphasis will be placed on novel and validated pain scoring systems, advances in clinical techniques and procedures, and the most useful analgesic agents, including alternative strategies to common parenteral opioids. Timely diagnosis and treatment of laboratory animal pain is becoming exceedingly important with the principal goal of improving animal welfare and well-being; however, effects of these analgesic techniques as well as the unaddressed pain on investigation outcomes must be balanced.
