This 1-hour presentation details the use of gabapentin in clinical practice including prescribing practices for human and veterinary medicine providing current evidence, safety and dosing reflected in the scientific, peer-reviewed literature. A review of its labeled indication following by the most common prescribed medical off-label human practices in the US provides insight to the recent dramatic increase in prescribing practices in veterinary medical practices. Pharmacology will be reviewed alongside review of pain pathophysiology to best identify if our prescribing practices of gabapentin in veterinary species are meeting our intended objectives for pain management.
